What is inferior fibular retinaculum?

The inferior fibular retinaculum is a fibrous membrane located on the outer side of the ankle joint. It helps to hold the tendons that travel down the outside of the ankle in place. These tendons include the peroneus longus and brevis muscles. The retinaculum attaches to the fibula bone in the leg and to the calcaneus bone in the foot. This structure plays an important role in stabilizing the ankle joint during walking, running, and jumping activities. Injuries to the inferior fibular retinaculum can result in instability or pain in the ankle joint.
